While this cake design doesn't exactly fall into the same category as my usual area of expertise (i.e. cutesy girlie cake designs), it was certainly a fun one to make. Carving the face was a whole new level of challenging. I started off with three 8 inch round cakes stacked on top of each other and ended up with something that definitely resembled a face :) As always with carving complicated shapes out of cake, the key was working slowly and carving off very small bits at a time.
The cake inside was red velvet, and the finishing touch was the addition of diced strawberry jelly to the top of the cake where the brain would be visible on a scalped head, which added to the whole gory aspect of the cake once it was cut. I really wish I had a photo of the birthday girl cutting the cake so that you could see the inside, particularly as she was dressed as the Kill Bill character Pai Mei AND was cutting it with a sword - but I don't have a photo so you will just have to try to imagine it!
As I was also a guest at Beth's All Things Tarantino party I can say with some level of certainty that the cake was met with a lot of enthusiasm. And it was great knowing that I could add something special to my friend's birthday! :)
